BC056_English: The After Action Review and Knowledge Management

The process of conducting After Action Reviews (or AARs), whether as part of normal business activities,or following a crisis event, ensures that lessons are learnt from potential gaps, shortfalls and failures. The AAR process also allows knowledge to be gathered and managed to support organizational growth, and a sustainable method of improving performance. The AAR process may be quick and simple, or it may be more detailed and protracted. It is not asymmetric, an opportunity to critique or complain, nor is it an opportunity to assign blame – rather it is intended as a positive mechanism for change and improvement. It may be formal, or informal, and it asks what was supposed to happen, what actually happened, why was there a difference, and what can be learnt from the event.
