The unique risks of working with minors and young adults present significant challenges for those engaged in youth related activities. The goal of the management team is to create a positive, appropriate and safe environment where young people can grow and thrive. However, organizations can only accomplish this, and concurrently safeguard hard won reputations, by exploring the business resiliency and continuity implications associated with planning and running youth related activities. Leaders must understand the unique risks and their implications in order to effectively address these, working through the prepare and prevent phase of business resiliency and continuity planning to define the required management structures and roles and responsibilities to create risk management strategies. Management teams must articulate how risks and emergency events will be managed, conduct risk assessments, vet participants, establish codes of conduct and adult to youth ratios, control youth to adult communications and imagery, manage youth with special needs or medical conditions, and prepare and train adults supporting events and activities. Should an emergency occur then pre-planned response measures should be triggered to ensure that young people, and the organization, are concurrently protected, that stakeholder engagement if systematic, and that the situation can be controlled and resolved quickly and effectively.
