It is important that leaders understand and are prepared to deal with a wide range of emergency situations which might present unique challenges when working with minors and youths. This includes developing an effective verbal reporting protocol, understanding and reacting to signs of risk in youth participants, understanding what is considered an inappropriate relationship with young people, defining how to control the risks of alcohol and illegal substance abuse, being able to respond effectively to medical emergencies, responding in a timely and effective manner to missing persons, understanding and managing bullying risks within a youth group, understanding, identifying and responding to potential suicide risks, knowing what to do if a young person is arrested, managing a physical assault situation, dealing with situations where inappropriate actions have occurred, managing and reporting on a sexual assault incident, and engaging and working with police authorities. By having pre-defined measures by which to react to, and control, likely emergency situations, then young people will be protected, and the organization will ensure that their business and reputational needs are also safeguarded.
