Widespread power outages can have catastrophic impacts upon an organization’s people, business and operational interests, assets and facilities. The loss of power impacts communications, emergency services, water, and the availability of commodities. The lack of light increases the risk of injuries, and accidents and fires can result. Planning for predictable or unpredictable power outages strengthens the organization’s resiliency to them. The ability to prepare and prevent, respond to and manage, and then transition and recover from such events, whether the direct risk from the power loss itself, or secondary risks from social unrest and the absence of effective rule of law is critical for effective business continuity to succeed.
