People respond to high stress and new situations in different ways, however some common aspects of response are known to exist and have a significant effect on people’s ability to think and act when under pressure. Decision-making is frequently slowed down and clouded as the physiological reaction to stress dominates, and this can potentially be fatal when quick, good decision-making is required. This mini-brief is designed to quickly provide staff knowledge and awareness of what the reaction to stress will be, how to pre-empt its negative effects on quick and clear thinking and respond in an emergency to protect themselves and others.
