Illegal checkpoints or checkpoints mounted by police or military that are hostile in nature can present an intimidating situation where gangs, criminals, tribal militia, aggressive or corrupt government forces, or even terrorist groups may stop, question occupants and search vehicles, extort bribes or subject occupants to assault or kidnap.
